HOW TO OVERCOME SETBACKS

Over the course of my weight loss journey, I experienced my share of setbacks.

Just because I struggled, doesn’t mean you have to.

Here are 4 mindsets that will help you overcome setbacks.

1. Focus on where you are going.

Your focus determines your reality.

Do not fall into the trap on focusing on what caused the setback, feeling sorry for yourself or trying to assign a blame. This will only waste your time and you will not have anything to show for it.

Focus on where you are going, how you can correct your course of action or what you need to change.

Your ultimate goal should be the focus.

2. Develop mental toughness.

This is another way of saying flex the muscle of self-control.

Sometimes you will encounter situations or circumstances beyond your control, and they will set you back.  This may even come in the form of people who hurt you intentionally.

Know that you can’t control events, places and people, but you can control how you react to them.

HOW YOU DEAL WITH THE EVENT HAS MORE POWER THAN THE EVENT ITSELF.

The only time you are ever truly powerless is when you hand over your choice of how events impact you.

If you are pushed to the ground, get back up.

If you are pushed to the ground again, get back up again.

Again.

And again.

The only time you lose is when you choose to stay down.

3. Set limits for disappointments.

It is natural to feel disappointment sometimes, and its of no use to suppress these (or any) feelings.

Give yourself time to acknowledge the feeling, but not for too long.

Set a time limit -an hour or two, during which you can feel and explore the feelings and reflect.

After that time, redirect that energy towards taking a forward-moving step.

Ask yourself ‘What now?’ and make a plan of action on how you’re going to move forward.

4. Manage your self-talk.

Setbacks can be a trap for self-doubt.

Manage your thoughts so that you’re focus is on the future, and the steps you can take to remedy the situation or find a new alternative altogether.

Give yourself credit where credit is due.

Acknowledge the setback as a set up for a comeback and get to work.
